Self storage. Estètiques de l'emergència habitacional explores home rites and phenomenologies by adressing "democratic design", "self storage" and "habitat" concepts, as a way to approach Barcelona's current dwelling issue.

From these concepts, which play a significant role on the exploitation of the domestic sphere carried out by such companies as IKEA (international), Bluespace (national) or Haibu 4.0 (local), the project addresses the growing demand for standardized and economic products and services adaptable to any house.

In times of fierce globalization like these, dwelling, far from being a fundamental right, is inserted into a speculative market. Thus, the standards of inhability are getting worse in global cities where the most suitable option is renting a room in a shared flat.

This dynamic, which only increases the degree of mobility of the individual in the contemporary city, has been defined by the spanish arquitect Andrés Jaque, under the name of The Rolling House and The Rolling Society. In this sense, the dwelling, far from being that identitary space associated with the family is now understood as a space for temporary uses shared by individuals with fragile interpersonal relationships. In this framework, the move to a new home, becomes capitalized by a market sector specialized in the management of a permanent temporariness.

This context fosters the development of a diversified "transaesthetic" industry that offers products and services with a defined value of use: from the Haibu 4.0 cabins, passing by the Bluespace storage rooms, to the IKEA Ombyte collection, a new set of designed carts and cardboard boxes to face the next move. Thus, the project proposes an investigation in which the reflection on the ways to inhabit the workshop of La Escocesa and the creation of structures from the hacking of materials commercialized by these companies converge, to problematize a process of bunkerization that projects the body as merchandise.

Self storage. Estéticas de la emergencia habitacional explora los ritos y fenomenologías del hogar a partir del cuestionamiento de los conceptos "diseño democrático", "self storage" y "habitáculo", y desde la ciudad de Barcelona.

A partir de estos conceptos, centrales en las políticas comerciales de empresas dedicadas a la explotación del ámbito doméstico como IKEA (internacional), Bluespace (nacional) o Haibu 4.0 (local), se aborda la creciente demanda de productos estandarizados y económicos, en un momento de feroz globalización en el que la vivienda deja de ser un derecho fundamental y se inserta en el mercado, degenerando en infravivienda.

Esta dinámica, que no hace más que incrementar el grado de movilidad del individuo en la ciudad contemporánea, se abordará a partir de paradigmas como The Rolling House y The Rolling Society, desarrollados por el arquitecto Andrés Jaque. En este sentido, la vivienda, lejos de ser aquel espacio asociado al hogar familiar, se consolida hoy como un espacio de uso temporal compartido por individuos con frágiles vínculos interpersonales. En este marco, la mudanza, el traslado físico y psicológico a una nueva vivienda, es capitalizada por un mercado especializado en la gestión de una provisionalidad permanente.

Este contexto provoca el desarrollo de una diversificada industria transestética que comercializa productos y servicios con un valor de uso bien definido: desde los habitáculos de Haibu 4.0, pasando por los trasteros de Bluespace, hasta la colección Ombyte de IKEA, un nuevo set de carretillas y cajas de cartón de diseño para afrontar la próxima mudanza. Así, el proyecto propone una investigación en la que confluyan la reflexión sobre las maneras de habitar el taller de La Escocesa y la creación de estructuras a partir del hackeo de materiales comercializados por estas empresas, para problematizar un proceso de bunkerización que proyecta el cuerpo como mercancía.
